Microderm facial aftercare do's and don'ts for the first 7 days in San Diego

Our clients often tell us they love the skincare advice just as much as the relaxing facial itself, and after microdermabrasion that advice matters most for the first week. The single biggest rule is simple: SPF every morning, no exceptions. Right after your microderm facial, keep things gentle: cleanse with a mild, non-foaming cleanser, moisturize, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid direct sun, hot water, heavy sweating, and exfoliating products. Mild redness for 24 to 48 hours is common, and it usually settles quickly when you protect your skin.

First 24 to 48 hours: the microdermabrasion rules that prevent irritation

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation. In our microdermabrasion session, we use a precision spray of small crystals to exfoliate the outer skin layers, and that’s exactly why the first 1 to 2 days are about calming and protecting.

Quick checklist: gentle cleanse, soothing moisturizer, SPF 30+ (physical is great), no hot water, no sweating workouts, no exfoliants.

Do this the day of and the day after

  • Cleanse gently. Use a mild, non-foaming cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry, don’t rub.
  • Moisturize like it’s your job. Fragrance-free is usually the safest bet. Your skin tends to feel a little tight after resurfacing.
  • SPF every morning, reapply if you’re outdoors. San Diego UV is no joke even when it’s “not that hot.”

Skip these for at least 24 to 48 hours

  • Hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs. Heat plus freshly exfoliated skin often equals stinging and redness that hangs around.
  • Heavy sweating workouts. We generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before a hard gym session.
  • Pools and ocean swims. Chlorine and salt can irritate, and public water adds infection risk when your barrier is recovering.

Days 3 to 7: keep the glow without accidentally scrubbing it off

A lot of our regulars come in for routine support to keep their skin glowing. This is the week where that “polished” microderm look can really show up, but only if you don’t pile on extra exfoliation at home.

Avoid active exfoliants for 3 to 7 days. That includes retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, scrubs, and “peel pads.” If you’re not sure what counts, bring the product in or send us a photo of the label.

Don’t pick or “help” flakes. If you get a little dryness, it’s usually better to add moisturizer than to exfoliate again.

Rancho Bernardo life is outdoorsy, and we love that. Just give your skin a short break. We suggest skipping sunny hikes and long patio afternoons for 48 to 72 hours, including places like Bernardo Winery where you can end up in midday sun longer than you think.

These steps apply for our clients coming in from Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch, Poway, Rancho Penasquitos, Sabre Springs, and Carmel Mountain Ranch. Same sun, same rules.

The simple product routine we like after a dermabrasion facial

After a microderm facial, your routine should feel boring for a few days. That’s a good thing. You’re protecting fresh skin so you keep that noticeably smoother, brighter look so many people love right after treatment.

Morning (takes 2 to 3 minutes)

  • Gentle cleanse or a quick rinse if you’re dry.
  • Soothing, fragrance-free moisturizer.
  • Physical broad-spectrum SPF 30+. Reapply if you’re outside, driving a lot, or sitting by a bright window.

Night

  • Gentle cleanse. No cleansing brushes.
  • Moisturizer. If you’re feeling extra dry, a simple occlusive layer can help lock it in.

Makeup tip: If you wear makeup, we prefer you wait 24 hours when you can. When you restart, go light and choose mineral formulas, then remove it gently at night.

Red flags vs normal: when to reach out to Skin by Nesrin

A little pinkness, mild sensitivity, and a “tight” feeling often show up in the first day or two. That usually calms down fast with gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and serious SPF. A lot of our long-time clients stick with us because we’re specific about what your skin needs and we keep the plan simple.

“Nesrin has expertly taken care of my skin for over 12 years! She does amazing work; my skin feels so refreshed and clear after her facials.”

A quick note on wording: microderm vs hydrodermabrasion facial

People use a few names online, including “hydrodermabrasion facial” and “hydradermabrasion facial.” Aftercare basics stay very similar: protect your skin barrier, avoid extra exfoliation for several days, and treat SPF like part of your skincare, not an optional step. If you’re not sure which service you booked, just ask us and we’ll walk you through it.

Most people see mild redness that settles within 24 to 48 hours. If redness is getting worse after day 2, or you’re feeling intense heat, pain, or swelling, reach out so we can guide you.

If you can, skip makeup for the first 24 hours. When you restart, go light and apply gently. Mineral makeup is usually a good choice, and removal should be soft and thorough at night.

We generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before heavy sweating workouts. Light movement is fine if it doesn’t overheat you, but intense cardio too soon can trigger extra redness and irritation.

Hold off for at least 24 to 48 hours. Saunas and steam add heat that can increase irritation, and pools, hot tubs, and ocean water can raise infection risk and sting while your skin barrier is recovering.

Stick with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer and a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning. Physical (mineral) sunscreens are often a comfortable choice right after exfoliation. If you’re unsure about a specific product, send us a photo of the label and we’ll help you pick the safer option for the week.

The basics are very similar for the first week: keep cleansing gentle, moisturize, wear SPF daily, and avoid exfoliating products and retinoids for several days. The main goal is the same, protect your freshly treated skin so you keep your results.

People often use these terms interchangeably online. Aftercare usually follows the same conservative rules: gentle skincare only for a few days, no extra exfoliation, avoid heat and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours, and take SPF seriously.
