First Time Full Face Waxing? Simple Prep & What to Expect

One of our regulars told us, “I know I am in good hands, which lets me fully relax during the treatment.” If you’re feeling nervous about your first full face wax, that’s normal. Most first-timers aren’t worried about the end result. They’re worried about the unknown part, like how much it stings, how red they’ll be, and if it’s going to feel awkward.
Here’s the straight answer. A full face wax removes unwanted hair from the upper lip, chin, cheeks, and jawline in one session. Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes. The sting is quick, redness is usually temporary, and you walk out immediately smoother. The results typically last several weeks, which is why busy Rancho Bernardo and San Diego clients love it before weekend plans.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through prep, what happens step-by-step in the room, and the aftercare that keeps your skin calm and clear.
5 prep steps that make full face waxing easier (and calmer)
The best wax appointments are the ones you prepared for just a little. Nothing complicated, just a few smart choices that reduce sensitivity and help us get every area cleanly.
Quick prep checklist: Grow hair to about 1/4 inch, gently exfoliate 48 to 72 hours before, and avoid retinoids or chemical peels for 7 to 14 days.
- Let it grow. We generally recommend about 1/4 inch of hair so the wax can grab evenly. If it’s too short, we end up chasing patches.
- Skip shaving between appointments. It can change the growth pattern and make the next wax feel more “pokey.”
- Pause actives. Retinol, tretinoin, strong acids, and recent peels can make facial skin lift or irritate. If you’re unsure what counts, tell us what you’re using and we’ll help you time it safely.
- Exfoliate gently, not the night before. Aim for 48 to 72 hours ahead, and keep it mild. No aggressive scrubs.
- Respect the San Diego sun. Avoid tanning and heavy UV exposure for 48 hours before. Waxed skin plus strong sun tends to get cranky fast.
Also, please tell us if you’ve used Accutane, have a fresh sunburn, open lesions, or had a recent chemical peel. We’ll reschedule if needed and can do a patch test if you’re sensitive.

Our vibe tends to be calm and friendly. People tell us they feel comfortable fast, even if they came in nervous. One client put it simply: “She is very gentle and attentive, ” and that’s exactly how we approach waxing too.
When you arrive
We’ll start with a quick check-in about your skin and what you want removed. If you’re using retinol, recently had a peel, or you’re dealing with irritation, tell us up front. We’d rather adjust the plan than push through and leave you sensitive.
During the wax (what it actually feels like)
We cleanse the area, apply wax in small, controlled sections, then remove it quickly. The sting is brief and it varies by zone. Upper lip and chin usually feel sharper. Cheeks tend to be milder. Jawline is a mixed bag, especially if hair is thicker there.
If you’re anxious about pain, let us know. We can use sensitivity-reducing techniques like smaller sections, extra skin support, and steady pacing. Some people also do better with a quieter appointment, while others relax by chatting. Either is fine. We’re good at reading the room.
Brows, chin, lip, cheeks, and the finishing touches
Our full face wax is $48 and targets the brows, chin, and lip area, plus the rest of the facial hair cleanup that gives you that smooth “reset.” We finish with soothing products to calm the skin and reduce that hot, flushed feeling that can pop up right after a pull.
Small but important: If you have an event, plan your wax 2 to 3 days ahead. First-timers tend to run a little pink longer than regulars, especially around the upper lip.
After your wax: redness, bumps, and how to keep skin smooth
Right after waxing, it’s normal to see temporary redness, a warm feeling, or tiny raised bumps. Most people calm down within a day or two. If you have reactive skin, it can take a bit longer.
“My experience was so relaxing and soothing, and Nesrin gave me great advice on how to take care of skin with its specific needs.”
one of our regulars
For the first 24 to 48 hours, we generally recommend keeping things simple. Skip heavy workouts, hot tubs, steam rooms, and very hot showers. Hold off on strong actives and anything heavily fragranced. And in San Diego, protect that freshly waxed skin from strong sun for 48 hours before and after, since UV exposure can make irritation linger.
If you’re red, a cooling gel and a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer usually helps. If you’re prone to clogged pores, keep makeup light for the first day if you can.
Most people rebook facial waxing every 3 to 5 weeks. Staying on a schedule often means less discomfort over time because the hair comes in finer and more evenly.
Rancho Bernardo tips: timing your wax around work, sun, and events
If you’re fitting this into real life, here are the patterns we see with our Rancho Bernardo clients and neighbors coming in from 4S Ranch, Poway, Rancho Penasquitos, Sabre Springs, and Carmel Mountain Ranch.
Pick a time that works with redness
If you want the least “pink time” during your day, book when you can go straight home after. A lot of people like early morning, lunchtime, or evening because the appointment itself is quick and the first few hours are when you’ll look the most flushed.
Plan ahead for winery weekends and hotel stays
Full face waxing is popular before photos, dinners, and weekend getaways because it’s low-maintenance and camera-friendly. Our best advice is to do it 2 to 3 days before your plans. That gives your skin time to settle and keeps you out of that last-minute panic window.
Insider tip we actually use: If you’re nervous, tell us at the start. We’ll begin with a milder area like the cheeks so you can get used to the sensation before we tackle the sharper spots.
